Africa Out of the Blue was my first wall painting. The idea had been on my mind for many years, and I always thought that I’d commission an artist to bring it to life. Decided to head to Lowes (home improvement store) and buy blue and yellow paints along with a few cans of black, grey and white, and started.

Finding the right spot was easy since the sun was brightest toward the end of the garage, giving the best light to both sides. Traced out the circle and the shape of Africa, then got to work. Had never spray painted before, so there was that risk of messing it up. But every time doubt stuck, I recalled that whatever you create will take a life of its own once complete. Using this mindset, I knew imperfection was part of the creation if something went wrong.

It’s Big!

It’s as wide as me with my arms stretched out.

When the painting was complete, it was better than I anticipated and my neighbors agreed. Turns out I am creative and can bring my ideas to life, without commissioning another.

What Else?

Africa is rising out of the blue, with innovation and looking ahead to create the next big thing. We can all help by pitching in to:

  • Provide better healthcare

  • Better sanitation and water supply

  • Empower more women in villages and small towns

  • Support innovation
